Thank you for contacting me regarding the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
Like millions of Americans across the nation, my heart breaks for the victims and their families – this was an act of pure evil. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine the pain that these parents must feel. This was a horrific and senseless act of violence, and I will continue to pray for peace and healing in Uvalde and across our nation.
This tragedy underscores the need for lawmakers to engage in serious conversations on bolstering school safety, supporting law enforcement training and efforts to stop individuals who seek to do harm, and delivering critical mental health support in our communities. As a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I advocated for funding grants to curb violent crime in schools by supporting law enforcement and providing schools with life-saving safety resources.
Any legislation put on the House floor must focus on keeping guns out of the wrong hands without infringing upon the rights of law-abiding citizens or violating due process. Unfortunately, several bills being discussed right now fail to offer real solutions – they would target law-abiding citizens without preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands. Instead, Congress should focus on efforts to bolster school safety, train law enforcement, crack down on illegal weapons, and help deliver mental health resources. Please know that as your Representative, I intend to engage in these tough, but necessary policy conversations to prevent gun violence.
