Senator Rand Paul, Senator Mitch McConnell, and Representative Andy Barr:
As a constituent from Lexington, KY, I respectfully urge you to support continued federal funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and for public broadcasting through NPR and PBS.
Both programs provide lasting, measurable benefits to Kentucky. The ARC has supported economic development in Appalachia for over 60 years—particularly through job training, infrastructure, and workforce readiness. Cutting its funding would hinder efforts to promote long-term growth and economic resilience in an area that continues to face serious challenges.
Public broadcasting, likewise, offers trusted, non-commercial programming that educates, informs, and connects communities. NPR and PBS are especially valued in rural areas, where media options can be limited. Kentuckians turn to these services for educational content, in-depth journalism, and cultural programming that is often not available elsewhere.
I am concerned that proposals to defund ARC and public broadcasting disproportionately affect the very regions you represent. These cuts send a message that rural communities must do more with less, despite decades of underinvestment. I do not believe eliminating ARC funding will strengthen Appalachia’s economy, any more than cutting Medicaid improves public health or reducing PBS access leads to a more informed society.
I respectfully ask that you advocate for maintaining current funding levels for both the ARC and public broadcasting. These programs are investments in people, opportunity, and civic well-being across our Commonwealth.
