Dear Mrs. Killam:

Thank you for contacting me about impeaching President Donald Trump. I appreciate hearing from you.

The United States Constitution gives Congress the authority to impeach presidents, vice presidents, and other federal officials if they commit “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” The House of Representatives has the sole power to issue articles of impeachment. It is the responsibility of the Senate to hold a trial and either acquit or convict and remove the federal official from office. Conviction and removal requires a two-thirds majority vote of Senators present. The House of Representatives has not passed any articles of impeachment for the Senate to consider.

I voted to convict President Donald Trump in both of his impeachment trials. In explaining my vote to convict in Trump’s first impeachment trial, I said, “Unchallenged evil spreads like a virus” and that acquittal would lead to worse behavior. That proved true less than a year later when Donald Trump incited a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn his electoral defeat – leading to his second impeachment trial shortly after he left office, in which I again voted to convict Trump and bar him from future federal office. Nothing President Trump has done in his second term has led me to reconsider my judgment that he is unfit for the presidency or any position of public trust.

Turning a blind eye to President Trump’s illegal actions in and out of office sets a dangerous precedent that could embolden more bad actors in the future. Please be assured that I will continue to do everything in my power to safeguard our democracy.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

We the people have spoken: Donald Trump is unfit to lead our country.  He must be removed as quickly as possible.  He is not making the choices that are good for our nation, and none of the US citizens want war; especially with Iran.  I implore you to speak up for us, the citizens, and stop the president.  You were all elected to speak for us, therefore it is YOUR job, your duty, to do what is best for our country.  Impeach the president!
