Neighbor,

Right now, the House of Representatives is considering the so-called “Big Ugly Bill,” a sweeping Republican proposal that would severely harm families across Washington state—including tens of thousands in the Ninth Congressional District.

This bill is one of the most reckless and cruel legislative efforts I've seen in my career.

I'm voting NO as soon as the final vote is called.

Image

I joined MSNBC earlier today to discuss this devastating bill and the impact it will have on our nation. You can watch that interview here.

Here's my full statement about this devastating bill:

“This bill is one of the most reckless and cruel legislative efforts I’ve seen in my career and it’s Washington families who would pay the price.

“It threatens the basic health care coverage that hundreds of thousands of people across our state depend on. It strips food assistance from tens of thousands of families. It raises energy costs, cuts clean energy jobs, and guts support for our public schools — all while giving billionaires a massive tax break and adding over $3 trillion to the debt.

“In our district, we know how critical programs like Apple Health and SNAP are to ensuring that families, seniors, and children can live with dignity. We know what happens when hospitals close, when energy bills spike, and when student debt becomes even more crushing. This bill would make all of that worse.

“Let’s be clear: none of this is necessary. These cuts aren’t about balancing the budget — this bill actually increases the debt and deficit by trillions. These cuts are about handing more power and more money to the wealthiest Americans while punishing working people. It’s cynical, it’s dangerous, and it’s wrong.

“The people of the Ninth District elected me to fight for their best interests, not to stand by while Congress pulls the rug out from under their lives. I will be voting no on the Big Ugly Bill and I urge my colleagues to do the same.”

Dear Robert,

Thank you for contacting me about Iran. Your civic participation helps me to better represent Washington’s Ninth Congressional District, and I thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts on this matter.

I am concerned with President Trump’s unilateral decision to strike Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. I condemn in the strongest terms the President’s decision to order the U.S. military to strike Iran’s nuclear sites. The President did not seek authorization from Congress or demonstrate that Iran posed an immediate threat to the security of the United States. Furthermore, the President failed to provide clear objectives for these actions and there are no guarantees that it will eliminate the possibility of Iran developing a nuclear weapon or how long it might set their program back. Engaging in direct conflict places U.S. service members and military sites in the Middle East squarely in the crosshairs of Iran and its many proxies. These actions could further escalate tensions, destabilize the region, and drag the United States into an avoidable war.

This is the latest action in a string of reckless and often illegal decisions by President Trump that ultimately harm the people of our nation. As Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Committee, I quickly led the introduction of a War Powers Resolution to claw back power from President Trump and prevent him from escalating international conflicts without Congressional approval. It is imperative that serious actions are based on the democratic process.

I support Israel in their efforts to defend themselves against the threat from Iran. Iran's stated foreign policy has been the destruction of Israel since the Iranian Islamic Republic was formed over 45 years ago. No other country in the world in modern history has faced a regional neighbor bent on destroying it over such a long period of time. Iran has backed terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis all of which also have the overt objective of eliminating the nation of Israel. Given this reality, Iran's pursuit of a nuclear weapon poses an existential threat to Israel, and Iran's recent significant increase in their uranium enrichment and pursuit of a nuclear capability left Israel with no good options.

The United States and others should continue to pursue a diplomatic solution to ending the conflict between Israel and Iran, but that solution will require Iran to end their nuclear program and other assurances that Iran will stop their efforts to destroy Israel. If you would like to hear more on my opposition to President Trump’s strikes on Iran, please explore my local and national media appearances on my YouTube channel, @RepAdamSmith.

The comments I receive from constituents are an integral part of understanding the issues that are important to our community. Please know that your input is greatly valued, and I hope that you will not hesitate to reach out to me or my office in the future.

Sincerely,

Adam Smith

Neighbor,

I am excited to announce a unique opportunity for residents of the 9th Congressional District to give input on critical issues in our communities such as public safety, mental health, and behavioral health.

Image

My office is teaming up with Civic Genius, a program of the National Civic League, to host a new kind of town hall – one designed to bring more voices to the table for a thoughtful and productive conversation.

Ours will be the very first congressional district in the country to use this innovative town hall format developed by the National Civic League.

Image

How it works

My goal is to have a real conversation about what people in our district are experiencing, what is most important to you, and how I can best represent you in Congress.

  1. Residents will discuss the issue in small groups and give feedback on different policy ideas – both with each other and with me. This format will allow us to engage in deeper dialogue than at a traditional town hall.
  2. To ensure that constituents from all corners of our district have a voice in the discussion, we will select participants by lottery and create a panel of residents that reflects our district’s demographics. Every resident of the 9th Congressional District is eligible to register.

Visit the FAQ to learn more here.

How to Participate

Register for the lottery HERE by July 18 at 5pm. If you are randomly selected to participate, we will notify you on July 22.

Even if you are not selected in the lottery, you can give your input HERE.

Event Details

Date: Tuesday, August 5
Time: 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Location: Coming soon!

Please reach out to my office at 425-793-5180 if you need assistance or have any questions.

I will continue to host traditional town halls and tele-town halls, and welcome all constituents to these events. As always, you can contact my office any time.

I hope you to register for the lottery and to share this with others in our district. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Sincerely,

Just moments ago, I introduced a War Powers Resolution to hold President Trump accountable.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Neighbor,

Just moments ago, I introduced a War Powers Resolution, with my colleagues Reps. Meeks and Himes, to order the removal of U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran absent a Congressional authorization, while preserving the ability for U.S. Armed Forces to defend the U.S. and its partners and allies from imminent attack.

Image

On, June 23, 2025, Reps. Adam Smith, Gregory Meeks, and Jim Himes introduced a War Powers Resolution in response to Trump's unauthorized strikes on Iran this past weekend.

Congressman Gregory Meeks, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Congressman Jim Himes, the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence joined me in introducing this crucial War Powers Resolution. Here's a copy of our joint statement:

"President Trump must not be allowed to start a war with Iran, or any country, without Congressional approval. Yet President Trump ordered strikes on Iran this past weekend without meaningful consultation or Congressional authorization.

"We still don’t know whether these strikes eliminated Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities, and the administration has offered no clear strategy. Instead, the President has posted on social media about regime change, undermining any claim that this was a narrowly tailored operation to eliminate a nuclear threat. Without a coherent strategy for preventing Iran’s program from bouncing back, including through diplomacy, we risk further escalation. No thoughtful deliberation nor careful planning occurred here — and serious actions demand serious debate, not presidential impulse.

"The War Powers Resolution we’ve introduced today orders the removal of U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran, while allowing U.S. forces to carry out defensive operations to defend the United States and its partners and allies from imminent attack, including those defending Israel. Again, President Trump must not be allowed to start a war with Iran without Congressional approval."

Neighbor,

This past week, I've been busy meeting with folks across our district to learn how we can improve our communities. Here are some of the roundtables I attended over the past few days.

Behavioral Health

Image

I joined local providers from the Ninth District in Bellevue on Monday to discuss cuts to federal support for behavioral health and how they will impact the district's ability to provide care. Representatives from Sayin', Thira Health, Valley Cities, SOUND Behavioral Health, and Rogers Behavioral Health also spoke about the current capacity of the behavioral health system in King County, and how to expand access to care.

Labor Roundtable

Image

Later on Monday I hosted a Labor Roundtable in Des Moines. I was very thankful for many of our local union leaders for joining us to tell their personal stories about labor protections and the state of union work during the Trump administration's funding freezes. I've done a lot of work in Congress to help union members, and I look forward to sharing this with my colleagues in D.C.

Maternal Health Roundtable

Image

On Tuesday afternoon, Congresswoman Kim Schrier (WA-08) and I heard from local health care providers in Auburn about how the Trump Administration's proposed cuts to Medicaid can lead to reduced access to maternal health care in Washington. With many hospitals and clinics at risk of closing their doors, I remain committed to supporting women's health. I greatly appreciated this conversation.

Housing Authority Roundtable

Finally, I welcomed members of public housing authorities to a roundtable at my district office on Wednesday afternoon. To me, affordable housing is a top priority, so this conversation about federal cuts, voucher allocation, and public safety in relation to housing was very important. I've introduced several pieces of legislation to make housing more affordable, so I thank our attendees from across King County who participated in this talk.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update. If you have any questions or comments, please contact my office.

Sincerely,

Ms. Cantwell, Ms. Murray, and Mr. Smith,

Please do all you can to block the involvement of United States Forces in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The US should not help Israel in its unprovoked war with Iran.

I believe Israel has committed genocide in Palestine and wants to expand that conflict throughout the Middle East.

The US should not be sucked in to anther conflict in the Middle East.

Again.. Please do all you can to keep us from spending American lives and treasure in another Middle East conflict.

Thank you,
