Congressman Bera,

I’m writing you as a father, a firm believer in the Constitution, and someone who looks out for the people in my neighborhood. That includes widows, seniors, and women who live alone. These are folks who deserve the same right to defend themselves that the Constitution promises every law-abiding American.

H.R. 38 is a step in the right direction. It recognizes that if a person can carry a concealed firearm legally in their own state, they should not suddenly become a criminal just because they cross into another state. That is common sense and that is the Constitution.

But I’ve looked at the current bill, and there are problems that need to be addressed. It still lets states and local governments shut down carry rights on public property. That guts the purpose of the bill. It also limits what a citizen can carry to one handgun and one magazine with only the ammo loaded into it. That kind of red tape puts honest people at risk for nothing more than a technical violation.

I am asking you to do what is right. Stand up for the people who follow the law. Stand up for the single mothers, the elderly, the people who do not have private security or gated communities. The Constitution does not stop at state lines. Neither should our rights.

Fix this bill and help pass it. That is what leadership looks like.

Sincerely,
Ben Pearl
