Dear Mr. Faga,

—Thank you for contacting me regarding Republican budget reconciliation.

As you know, House Republicans have been proposing massive cuts to health coverage and food assistance for millions of Americans — to pay for more tax cuts for the rich.

On February 12, 2025, House Republicans released H.Con.Res.14 – which establishes the budget for the federal government for Fiscal Year 2025 and sets forth budgetary levels for Fiscal Years 2026-2034. The proposal, endorsed by President Trump, would cut hundreds of billions of dollars from critical programs like Medicaid, jeopardizing the health and lives of millions of Americans.

On February 25, 2025, the resolution was considered for a vote on the House floor. Unfortunately, despite strong opposition from many of my colleagues and me, the resolution passed the House 217-215.

In Pennsylvania alone, nearly three million people rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for healthcare – including 39% of all the Commonwealth’s children, 47% of adults with disabilities, and 64% of people living in nursing homes. In our district, Medicaid is a lifeline for 45,000 children and 14,000 seniors.

In addition to deep cuts to Medicaid, the resolution advocates for:

  • $4.5 trillion in handouts for the richest in America,
  • Cuts to funding for education, childcare, transportation, and other basic public services, and
  • Measures to make college more costly for students, including by reducing funding for Pell Grants and public research.

As a new member of the House Appropriations committee, I will use my position and my voice to fight for robust and continued funding for critical programs.

As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to ensure American families have access to affordable, quality, and comprehensive healthcare. Know that I take this responsibility seriously, and I will continue to protect and expand Medicaid and defend against attacks aimed at cutting this program — and any other vital programs that benefit American families.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. I welcome and value your ideas and encourage you to sign up for my newsletter for more information.

            Sincerely,

          Madeleine Dean
          Member of Congress

The bill passed by the House last night is terrible! It damages needed safety nets, further enriches the already wealthy, weakens our court system and will increasingly hurt those in our society who need more assistance not less.

President Trump and the Republicans are destroying our country.
