I strongly oppose AB 1187, which burdens law-abiding gun owners under the guise of safety. As a father raising responsible citizens, I take firearm safety seriously. The Second Amendment is not a privilege, it is a constitutional right.
AB 1187 does nothing to stop crime but instead punishes responsible citizens with more bureaucracy. Requiring additional safety certificates and government-mandated training courses only impacts those who already follow the law. Meanwhile, criminals remain unaffected. California already has some of the strictest gun laws, adding more red tape does not make anyone safer.
Real gun safety comes through education, not restriction. Other states like Utah and North Carolina have implemented firearm safety training in schools, teaching students safe gun handling, responsibility, and respect. Programs like NRA’s Eddie Eagle and 4-H Shooting Sports have reduced accidental shootings and fostered safety awareness.
Instead of regulating law-abiding citizens further, California should be teaching firearm responsibility, just as we do with driver’s education. We do not ban cars to prevent reckless driving, we teach safe operation. Firearms should be treated the same way.
I urge you to reject AB 1187 and support real safety measures that educate rather than punish.
