Thank you for contacting me to express your thoughts on immigration laws. Your views on current issues are of the utmost importance to me, and your input in the legislative process helps me to serve more effectively as your Representative in Congress.
As you know, immigration has been a long-lasting debate that has resulted in minimal reforms, despite increasing challenges that are posed by our country’s complex and broken immigration system. Unfortunately, national discussions on this issue have been further complicated by failed policies promulgated by the White House and Congress. Immigration policy has become a politicized issue, and the poor enforcement of immigration laws has been abused by those who come here illegally, resulting in challenges and consequences for communities affected by immigration. Additionally, the politicization of immigration laws results is exacerbated by a prioritization of political rhetoric over finding long-term solutions.
To your specific question about certain visa requirements, it is true that certain types of non-permanent visas require the individual to leave the United States periodically to prove their non-permanent status. When immigration laws are not enforced toward individuals who enter the United States illegally, I recognize that this can create an unequal contrast between those with legal visas and those who disregard the law. The starting point, which H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, accomplishes, is to mandate an equal application of all the immigration laws while implementing practical reforms. While H.R. 2 is not a perfect solution – no bill is perfect – it takes meaningful steps to address the illegal immigration crisis our nation is facing, while also making common-sense changes to existing immigration policies to reduce the burden of the immigration system on those seeking to enter or remain in the United States legally.
As your representative in Congress, I am committed to finding real solutions to improve the immigration system. I am proud to have voted in favor of H.R. 2, and I urge the Senate to swiftly pass the bill and for President Biden to sign it into law. Should additional legislation regarding immigration come to the House floor for consideration, rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind.
